OUR STORY

History

For over 65 years, Pascoe Vale Church of Christ has been ministering to the local area. 154 Derby Street has been a wonderful home for the church, and we are grateful for all that God has provided to us over the years. Through the dedication and support of many members and other local churches, Pascoe Vale has been able to grow as we seek to serve the Lord.

1891

On the 7th February 1891, the Reverend George Bickford Moysey conducted the first Churches of Christ wedding in the Pascoe Vale area. G.B. Moysey was a minister at North Fitzroy and later president of Churches of Christ Conference.

1949

With the post-war population boom, Coburg Church of Christ proposed that land be purchased in Pascoe Vale. On 26th January 1949, two blocks of land were purchased at 154-156 Derby Street, for a total of £205.

1955

The first church service was held at Derby Street on 24th April 1955. The tent used for the service was setup the previous year and had been running a Sunday School for almost 200 local children. In 1956 the church became independently affiliated with Conference.

1957

A hut that was transported from the Snowy River Hydro Scheme was officially opened on 23rd November 1957. The Moreland, Coburg and Brunswick Churches of Christ guaranteed £7 a month to help cover the cost of transport and setup.

1963

After four years of fetes, cake stalls and a ‘Re-Building Appeal’, a brick chapel was built in front of the Snowy River hut at a cost of £5000. The chapel was officially opened on 16th March 1963, with new pews arriving just in time for the first wedding.

1969

In 1969, Pascoe Vale joined the Regional Church which also included Brunswick, Coburg, Fawkner and Moreland. This was a challenging time for local churches as membership was declining, however for the next 20 years the Regional Church was able to support the congregations.

1980

During the 1970s, Pascoe Vale supported and housed many student ministers in the newly donated manse at 152 Derby Street. Julie Reid was a student at the church for five years before graduating and being appointed full-time minister in 1980.

1986

By 1986, the Good Companions girls club had been going strong for two decades, with a total of 45 girls then in the club. The Pascoe Vale girls undertook many projects including knitting toys for the Children’s Hospital and adopting a great grandfather and great grandmother from the Fred Combridge Aged Care Home.

2002

Ladies Fellowship began again at Pascoe Vale, and continues to meet each Tuesday at 10am. The Ladies Fellowship support numerous charities, including Operation Christmas Child where each year the ladies put together many gift-filled shoe boxes which are sent to children around the world who are living in poverty.

2010

A special Emergency Services Worship Service was held to acknowledge and pray for those members of the police force, fire brigade and ambulance service. This service was attended by many representatives of the local emergency services.

2017

Christmas-eve services at Pascoe Vale continue to provide outreach opportunities as the local community are invited to gather together to sing carols in amongst the beautiful church grounds.

2018

Javier De La Rosa came onboard at Pascoe Vale as part-time minister until Dec 2019. Javier’s ministry with Pascoe Vale and CrossCulture affirms the strong relationship between our two churches. CrossCulture has been providing much ministry support to the church since 2012.
